Before the axe can be forged into its final shape the metal is heated to a very high temperature, which allows it to be manipulated into a variety of shapes. The axe head is usually shaped first, followed by the handle.

Handle material decisions often come down to personal preference, as a hickory handle feels the most natural in the hand and can stand up to heavy usage. However, other materials like fiberglass or composites can be lighter to swing and can resist damage from impact.

Once the axe head and handle are finished, they're combined to form a complete axe by welding them together. The edges of the eye are then upset to help the weld joint match up when the axe is folded shut. Finally, the axe is fullered to form the features of its eye.
